Dogs love antler treats. They are nutritious, delicious, and provide your dog the necessary material to clean their teeth. Like all treats given to dogs, eventually it will deteriorate. Antlers are strong, but a dogs constant gnawing will break away the antler until small pieces remain. The pieces that scrape off the antler are fine for your dog to swallow, they are in fact an integral part of your dogs nutrition. It’s a large chunk of antler that remains that can hurt your dog. Once the dog can swallow the antler it is time to take the antler away. The repercussions can be lethal if the animal does manage to swallow the antler. Take a look inside your dogs mouth, if you feel that the antler could fit, take it away.
If you see your dog trying to swallow an antler toy, immediately reach in the dogs throat and try to pry it out. You can try the Heimlich Maneuver on your dog if they do start to choke on the antler. If you manage to get the antler back throw it away. If they do swallow the antler piece, go to the vet as soon as possible. The piece can result in an intestinal blockage and even perforation. This can result in death or serious injury and extensive surgery.
